How to Tune into Your Senses When Being Outdoors

Hiking in vesterålen view on lofoten mountains.

Spending time in nature is an invitation to slow down and connect with the world around you. One powerful way to deepen your experience is to consciously tune into your senses. By bringing attention to what you see, hear, feel, smell, and taste, you can ground yourself in the present moment and awaken a deeper sense of presence.

Here are some guiding questions to reconnect to your senses

Sight

Let your eyes wander slowly.

  • What colors stand out to you?

  • How does the light shift on the landscape?

  • Can you notice small details like the shape of leaves or the movement of water?

  • How does it feel shifting focus from something small near you to a more open landscape view?

Hearing

Close your eyes for a moment and listen.

  • What is the most distant sound you can hear?

  • Can you notice layers of sound — birds, wind, water, your own breath?

  • Is there silence between the sounds?

  • How does it feel to just let all the sounds reach you without trying to think where they come from or from which direction?

Touch

Bring your attention to how your body feels and get curious about the small things around you!

  • How does the ground feel beneath your feet?

  • Can you notice the temperature of the air on your skin?

  • What textures can you feel if you touch a tree or moss?

  • Did the touch of an object match what you thought it would feel like before touching it?

Smell

Take a few deep breaths through your nose or bury you face in grass or moss. Allow yourself to smell anything you are curious about.

  • What scents are present in the air that you breathe in?

  • Is there a difference between the smell of the earth, plants, or sea?

  • Do the scents change when you move to a different spot?

  • How does it feel allowing yourself to take a whiff of something people usually don’t go around smelling?

Taste

If it feels safe and natural, explore taste.

  • Is there a taste in the air, like salt from the sea or the freshness of rain?

  • Can you taste the difference in the air when you breathe deeply?

  • Are there edible plants like berries or herbs around you?
